On November 7, 2004 Meri was diagnosed with type 1 (juvenile) diabetes. Saturday September
20th we will be walking for the fourth year as "Meri's Miracle" in the Pittsburgh Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk
to Cure Diabetes. JDRF was founded by parents of kids with diabetes, passionate about finding (and funding) a cure.
Meri is doing amazingly well. She has been using a Cozmo Insulin Pump for a year and
1/2 to deliver her insulin, instead of the 6-10 injections she was receiving previously. Cozmo has helped to make diabetes
much more manageable. In addition to the flexibility it gives Meri in what & when she can eat, we have seen a dramatic
improvement in her quarterly blood test results. Keeping those blood test results as close to 'normal' (a person without
diabetes) as possible will likely lessen Meri's probability of long term complications from diabetes.
Money raised by JDRF went into the development of insulin pumps, glucose meters, continuous
glucose monitors & all of the technology that makes life with diabetes easier & healthier. All of these tools
are great, and we are thankful for the advancements, but they are not a cure. Doctors, nurses, and scientists (some of whom
we have had the pleasure of meeting) are working hard to learn more about diabetes, what causes it, how to prevent it &
how to cure it. As you know, research is expensive.
Which is why we are asking for your help.
Donations can be made online at the JDRF link

Why We Walk

"I hope that needles, syringes, insulin pumps, infusion sets, glucagon, glucose
meters, quarterly blood draws won't be a part of Meri's life forever. I believe in supporting the doctors, nurses,
and scientists who are working hard to make that a reality. I also believe in lobbying our congress to keep
the NIH budget at current levels or higher. JDRF was founded by parents - passionate about finding a cure, committed
to quality research, and dedicated to being careful trustees of the money donated. In addition, JDRF funds outreach
to families living with diabetes. I walk so perhaps my daughter will never suffer the complications my friend, Jane,
has suffered. I walk so one day my daughter will return to a life she doesn't even remember - a life without diabetes."
-Betsy, Meri's mom

"I walk with Meri because I feel as a Healthcare
provider it is important to be a part of the lives of your patients. We work very hard at helping our "patients" live
longer, healthier, happier lives. I thank Meri for the opportunity to share in her experience."
-Dan Pharmacy Friend

"Why do I walk??? Why do we give??? I walk because
of Meri. She is such an inspiration to her Uncle Chuck and I! She has had to deal with some pretty
grown-up issues at such a young age yet she has handled everything remarkably well. We are always amazed by her
spirit and enthusiasm for educating those she meets about diabetes and she is ONLY 61/2 years old..........yet we also
see the ups and downs that come when her insulin levels are off or she gets a cold and we feel so helpless. We
would do whatever we could to have her live a life without diabetes. So by participating in the walk, I can
physically do something to help - by donating money to diabetes research, we can provide
the funding that will one day eliminate the need for needles and shots and insulin forever. That is our hope for
Meri and for the many others who live with diabetes everyday. With eveyone's help we will
win the battle - we will achieve Meri's Miracle!!!"
-Pat & Chuck (Meri's Aunt & Uncle)
